The local government of Pasig City has partnered with Sun Cellular and Mr. Quickie in providing free WiFi connectivity in all 30 barangays within the city. Dubbed as “Iyo Net: Free WiFi sa Barangay”, Pasig City constituents will just have to visit their barangay halls to avail of the free service.

“This all started in early 2013. We thought of a program focusing on the youth,” Pasig City Vice Mayor Christian “Iyo” Bernardo said. “We are happy that Sun Cellular and Mr. Quickie have pledged their support, as they were looking for a socially-relevant cause as well,” added Bernardo, as he explained that the support and his personal sponsorship have made the free WiFi service a reality.

Mr. Quickie CEO Emiliano Caruncho reveals that conceptualizing the whole project was a cinch, but actually executing it was a challenge. “It was a challenge to start because we did not know how to do it,” Caruncho noted.

He shared that the challenge of connecting the 30 barangays was addressed by Sun Cellular. Sun recommended a mobile WiFi solution that can be easily set up key areas of Pasig.

“Fortunately, I was with Sun. All our branches are using Sun Cellular,” Caruncho added.  Mr. Quickie is a current customer of Sun Business for its broad range of communication solutions—from postpaid lines to Message Cast SMS broadcast services.

According to Corinne Funk-Zablan, SME Marketing Head for Sun Cellular, “Part of our advocacy is to provide communication tools in aid of public service, and to enable city and municipal leaders to deliver services for the upliftment of lives and livelihood in the community.”

“This free WiFi service will provide more channels for communication to the citizens of Pasig, as well as boost productivity and efficiency in barangay centers,” concluded Bernando, as he underscored the important role of technology in empowering the City of Pasig.
